## Summary

Export the full database of your site as one file whenever you want, keep it as your own copy, and import it back later. It works the same on the Starto plan and on Premium.

## Key facts

- No size limit: The export has no size cap, however many collections and items you have. It runs in the background and the download starts when the file is ready.
- Safe import: An import replaces the current collections and items, and before it starts, the database as it is now is backed up automatically.
- One collection at a time: Need just one list? Export a single collection as JSON or CSV, or download the database statistics, from the same Database tab.

## How it works

1. **Open the settings**: In Studio, open Database and go to Settings. The Database backup card holds both the export and the import.
2. **Export the database**: Click Export next to Export the database. Every collection and item goes into one NDJSON file that downloads to your computer.
3. **Import when you need**: Click Import, choose an NDJSON file you exported earlier and confirm. The upload shows its progress and the collections come back with their items.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I back up my website database?

Open Database, then Settings, and use Export the database. You get one NDJSON file with every collection and item. Separate automatic database backups also run on their own in the Backups tab.

### What is an NDJSON file?

It is a text file with one JSON record per line, a common format for moving large amounts of data. It opens in any text editor, and many data tools and scripts can read it line by line.

### Does importing delete my current data?

Yes. The import replaces every current collection and item with the ones in the file. That is why a backup of the present database is saved automatically before the import begins.
